Founded in 789 by Idriss I on the banks of the Jawaher River, Fez is Morocco’s spiritual and cultural heart. His son, Idriss II, expanded the city in 808, establishing a second settlement on the opposite bank. These two rival communities eventually merged, forming what became Madinat Fas, one of the most historically rich cities in the world.
